The edge almost every jump in the guide lands on, which is reason enough to spend time on it for its own sake. Travelling backwards on the outside of the blade, leaning into the circle, with the difficulty that you cannot see where you are going and the instinct is to sit away from it.
Weight belongs over the middle of the blade. Sit back and it skids; reach for the toe and it stops. What makes this edge hard is the holding: keeping the shoulders and the free leg still against a rotation that wants to carry on. That is the run-out of a jump landing, practised on its own with the jump taken away.
Derived
RBO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): right foot, backwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
RBO traces an anticlockwise lobe seen from above the ice. Change any one of the three letters and it curves the other way; change two and it curves the same way again.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from LBO. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Backward strokingIce Skating Australia holds each backward stroke for two to three seconds with the free foot ahead above the line, and its backward edges keep the free leg in the same place.
- Backward one-foot glideNew Zealand moves the backward glide onto a curve and round a circle, which is the backward edges. On them, Ice Skating Australia keeps the free leg ahead, above the line.
Off the ice
- Balance on one legStanding on one leg with the ankle correcting all the time, as every edge asks.

- Extended edgeA plain edge held for a third of a circle, long enough to be a position in its own right.
- Right backward outside change of edgeRBO to RBI: the blade rolls across without turning, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Right backward outside chasséRBO to LBI: the free foot comes down beside the skating foot, nothing crossing, still travelling backwards on the same lobe.
- Right backward outside cross rollRBO to LBO: a step onto the other foot, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Right backward outside crossed step behindRBO to LBO: a step behind, with the legs crossed below the knee, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Right backward outside crossoverRBO to LBI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling backwards.
- Right backward outside loopRBO to RBO: a small circle traced on the same edge, still travelling backwards, and the lobe continues.
- Right backward outside slip chasséRBO to LBI: a step in which the free foot slides away along the ice, still travelling backwards, and the lobe continues.
