Forwards with the skate rolling towards the big-toe side, leaning into a circle that curves the other way. It usually feels more secure than an outside edge, because the free leg swings on the outside of the circle where there is room for it.
Holding it deep is the harder half. The free hip wants to open, and the moment it does the lobe flattens out. Most of the work is on the free side of the body: the hip that wants to open and the leg that swings with it.
Derived
RFI is three letters (foot, direction, edge): right foot, forwards, inside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
RFI traces an anticlockwise lobe seen from above the ice. Change any one of the three letters and it curves the other way; change two and it curves the same way again.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from LFI. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Forward strokingAn edge is a stroke held on one foot round a curve. Ice Skating Australia already asks for each stroke to be held for the skater's height.
- One-foot glideThe one-foot glide runs on a flat. New Zealand teaches it straight and then on a curve, which is the blade on an edge.
Leads to
9 elements in the guide are built on this one, and the 8 nearest are listed here.
- Right forward inside change of edgeRFI to RFO: the blade rolls across without turning, still travelling forwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Right forward inside loopRFI to RFI: a small circle traced on the same edge, still travelling forwards, and the lobe continues.
- Right forward inside step wideRFI to LFI: a step onto the other foot placed wide, nothing crossing, still travelling forwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Right forward inside mohawkRFI to LBI: a step onto the other foot, holding the edge and staying on the same lobe. No cusp.
- Right forward inside three turnRFI to RBO: half a turn into the circle, changing edge and staying on the same lobe.
- Right forward inside 1½ twizzleRFI to RBO: 1½ rotations on one foot, travelling, one curl and no cusp.
- Right forward inside 2½ twizzleRFI to RBO: 2½ rotations on one foot, travelling, 2 curls and no cusp.
- Right forward inside double twizzleRFI to RFI: 2 rotations on one foot, travelling, 2 curls and no cusp.
