The edge almost every jump in the guide lands on, which is reason enough to spend time on it for its own sake. Travelling backwards on the outside of the blade, leaning into the circle, with the difficulty that you cannot see where you are going and the instinct is to sit away from it.
Weight belongs over the middle of the blade. Sit back and it skids; reach for the toe and it stops. What makes this edge hard is the holding: keeping the shoulders and the free leg still against a rotation that wants to carry on. That is the run-out of a jump landing, practised on its own with the jump taken away.
Derived
LBO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, backwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LBO traces a clockwise lobe seen from above the ice. Change any one of the three letters and it curves the other way; change two and it curves the same way again.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RBO. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Backward strokingIce Skating Australia holds each backward stroke for two to three seconds with the free foot ahead above the line, and its backward edges keep the free leg in the same place.
- Backward one-foot glideNew Zealand moves the backward glide onto a curve and round a circle, which is the backward edges. On them, Ice Skating Australia keeps the free leg ahead, above the line.

- Left backward outside change of edgeLBO to LBI: the blade rolls across without turning, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Left backward outside chasséLBO to RBI: the free foot comes down beside the skating foot, nothing crossing, still travelling backwards on the same lobe.
- Left backward outside cross rollLBO to RBO: a step onto the other foot, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Left backward outside crossed step behindLBO to RBO: a step behind, with the legs crossed below the knee, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Left backward outside crossoverLBO to RBI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling backwards.
- Left backward outside loopLBO to LBO: a small circle traced on the same edge, still travelling backwards, and the lobe continues.
- Left backward outside slip chasséLBO to RBI: a step in which the free foot slides away along the ice, still travelling backwards, and the lobe continues.
- Left backward outside mohawkLBO to RFO: a step onto the other foot, holding the edge and staying on the same lobe. No cusp.
