Skating exercise 2
Backward inside 3-turns into forward outside rockers, on power crossovers, covering at least three-quarters of the rink.

New on 01/10/2026, and the only exercise anywhere in Skills 1 to 7 with ice coverage written as a number: three-quarters of the width and the length of the rink. That single requirement is the reason it exists. Every element in it has been in the test since Skills 4 or 5, and none of them is comfortable to do while genuinely travelling.
The cluster is a backward inside 3-turn into a forward outside rocker, so the skater turns to forwards and then immediately turns again without changing foot. The rocker is the one that suffers: it needs a deep lobe and it arrives with whatever lobe the 3-turn left, which is usually shallower than it should be and shorter than it feels.
The crossovers are named as power crossovers, and that phrase is a specific ask. They are where the speed for the whole exercise comes from, and a skater who treats them as joins between turns will meet the coverage requirement on the first pair of lobes and miss it on the last.
Elements
- Left backward inside three turnLBI to LFO: half a turn into the circle, changing edge and staying on the same lobe.
- Right backward inside three turnRBI to RFO: half a turn into the circle, changing edge and staying on the same lobe.
- Left forward outside rockerLFO to LBO: half a turn into the circle, holding the edge and leaving on a new one.
- Right forward outside rockerRFO to RBO: half a turn into the circle, holding the edge and leaving on a new one.
- Left backward outside crossoverLBO to RBI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling backwards.
- Right backward outside crossoverRBO to LBI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling backwards.
- Right backward outside edgeRBO: the right foot travelling backwards on an outside edge, tracing an anticlockwise lobe.
- Left backward outside edgeLBO: the left foot travelling backwards on an outside edge, tracing a clockwise lobe.
