For coaches and officials

Everything on this site is unverified until somebody who teaches or judges this for a living says otherwise. If that is you, this page is the way in.

What we are asking of you

Read a description and say whether it is right. There is no minimum, no rota and no commitment: sign off one passage on the bus home and that is one passage better than it was.

Sign-off attaches to a passage. The same description of a forward outside three turn serves every page that needs it, so checking it once fixes it everywhere, and you never see the same paragraph eight times with the feet swapped. A passage carries a tick once three people have approved it, and each tick records who approved it and in what capacity, because a count on its own tells a reader nothing.

An objection is not a vote against two approvals. If one person says a passage is wrong, the tick comes off immediately and it goes back into the queue with the objection attached. Getting it wrong in public is the thing this project is most worried about; a majority is no comfort at all if the minority is right.

Who can take part

Coaches, judges and technical officials, whether you are working now or not. A licence is permission to teach, and knowledge outlasts it: a coach who stopped taking lessons five years ago has forgotten none of it, and often they have more time to give than the people still on the ice at six in the morning. So any of the following is enough:

How to apply

There is no sign-up form and no account to create, deliberately. You send an email, a human reads it, and if it checks out you are added to the list. That keeps the site as a set of static files with nothing to break into, and it means a bot cannot get in by filling something in faster than you can.

Open a pre-filled email to coaches@figureskating.guide, or write to that address yourself and include:

Name: · Governing body (BIS, SkateUK, ISU, other): · Coaching licence or membership number, if you hold one: · Qualification, and roughly when you took it: · Rink or club, now or previously: · Role: coach / judge / technical official / other: · Anyone already on the guide who can vouch for you (optional): · Anything else that helps us place you:

We check licence numbers against the governing body's own public register. If yours is lapsed or you are applying on a qualification or a vouch, say so plainly in that field. An honest gap is easy to deal with and an unexplained one is not.

What happens to your details

They go to a mailbox and no further. Nothing you send is stored in the site, in a database or in a third party's form service, and once a decision is made the application email is deleted. What survives is a line saying that a named person, in a named capacity, approved a particular passage, which is the part a reader needs to see. If you would rather be shown by role than by name, say so and that is how it will appear.

Comments

Comment threads under a passage are for verified coaches and officials only. It is a small enough field that a comment carries weight because of who wrote it, and opening it to everyone would turn that into a comment section. Everyone else is very welcome to send a correction to hello@figureskating.guide, and every one is read.

More about the guide, including what it costs and what it deliberately is not.
