Section 1
Rockers on both feet, a one and a half twizzle in the direction the skater chooses, a bracket into a cross roll, and a pivot movement to close.

The opening section, and the first place in the syllabus where the skater is allowed to choose which way to rotate. The twizzle carries an optional direction and so does the pivot movement at the end, with a slightly different run-in for each choice. Everything below this test has insisted on both sides; here the demand changes from symmetry to quality, which is what a programme is judged on.
The twizzle is the hinge of the section either way. One route takes it on the foot the skater is already travelling on and finishes on a held edge; the other steps first and takes the extended edge out of the twizzle itself. They are the same element with the difficulty moved: the first asks for a clean entry, the second for a clean exit.
The pivot movement closing the section is the one thing in Skills that is not a step, a turn or an edge, and it is the reason this page has a gap in it. Everything before it (two rockers, a 3-turn, a bracket rolled into a cross roll) has appeared at Skills 5 or above, and the section’s own objective is about linking them.
Elements
- Left forward outside crossoverLFO to RFI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling forwards.
- Right forward outside crossoverRFO to LFI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling forwards.
- Left forward outside rockerLFO to LBO: half a turn into the circle, holding the edge and leaving on a new one.
- Right forward outside rockerRFO to RBO: half a turn into the circle, holding the edge and leaving on a new one.
- Right backward inside three turnRBI to RFO: half a turn into the circle, changing edge and staying on the same lobe.
- Right forward inside 1½ twizzleRFI to RBO: 1½ rotations on one foot, travelling, one curl and no cusp.
- Left forward inside 1½ twizzleLFI to LBO: 1½ rotations on one foot, travelling, one curl and no cusp.
- Extended edgeA plain edge held for a third of a circle, long enough to be a position in its own right.
- Left backward inside bracket-cross rollLBI → LFO → RFO: 2 elements on two feet.
- Right forward outside three turnRFO to RBI: half a turn into the circle, changing edge and staying on the same lobe.
- Right backward outside edgeRBO: the right foot travelling backwards on an outside edge, tracing an anticlockwise lobe.
- Left backward outside edgeLBO: the left foot travelling backwards on an outside edge, tracing a clockwise lobe.
Not covered here
- The pivot movement that closes the section. It is BIS's own name for it and the guide has no element to link to: the rig holds a blade on an edge, and a pivot is a movement about a point.
- The start, the finish and the choreographic material between the sections, which are the skater's own and are not specified.
This page lists which elements the section calls for and what it is working on. It does not reproduce British Ice Skating's sequence, pattern or wording. For the section as published, go to their own document.
