BIS Skills 7
Not checked yet. The requirements on this page are a first draft by a non-expert, and no coach has seen them yet. Read them as a starting point and check them with a coach. Corrections are very welcome.
The last test before the programme, and the one where the syllabus stops introducing new kinds of turn and starts stacking the hard ones. A counter into a 3-turn, a counter into a two-and-a-half twizzle, a rocker into a counter into a cross roll: by Skills 7 most of the turns arrive attached to another one.
What is new is the demand that the difficult turn survives being entered from another difficult turn, with no glide in between to organise it on. No element here is new in the way the loop or the bracket were new.
October 2026 adds two more, and both take it as far as the level goes: a cluster of four counting the change of edge, which the guide lists as its parts, and the choctaw-3-turn-rocker, which has a page of its own.
For a competitor it is the Advanced Novice threshold. Entering a national championship in that category needs this test and a National 6 in technical and components, under the 2026/27 requirements.
Exercises
- Forward inside choctaws & backward outside counterschanges 01/10/2026Closed choctaws from a forward inside edge, and backward outside counters run into 3-turns, down both lengths of the rink.
- Backward outside choctaws & forward inside countersAn extended back outside edge into a closed choctaw, with a forward inside counter and a change of edge on the way out.
- Backward inside counters & twizzlesA forward outside 3-turn into a backward inside counter, which carries on into a two and a half rotation twizzle.
- Rocker-counterA rocker and a counter back to back on one foot, inside on the first side and outside into a cross roll on the second.
- Outside bracketsForward and backward outside brackets, four to six of them, on a figure of eight or a circle.
- Bracket-counter-twizzlenew 01/10/2026A forward inside bracket into a backward counter into a one and a half twizzle, finished with a change of edge.
- Choctaw-3-turn-rockernew 01/10/2026A closed choctaw into a backward inside 3-turn into a forward outside rocker, down both lengths of the rink.
Elements
Every element its exercises call for, gathered from them.
- Right forward inside choctawRFI to LBO: a step onto the other foot, changing edge and reversing onto a new one. No cusp.
- Left forward inside choctawLFI to RBO: a step onto the other foot, changing edge and reversing onto a new one. No cusp.

- Right backward outside counter-threeRBO → RFO → RBI: 2 turns on one foot.
- Left backward outside crossoverLBO to RBI: the free foot crosses in front of the skating foot onto the same lobe, still travelling backwards.
