BIS Skills 5
Not checked yet. The requirements on this page are a first draft by a non-expert, and no coach has seen them yet. Read them as a starting point and check them with a coach. Corrections are very welcome.
The first test with a rink requirement attached to it. Skills 5 and everything above it can only be taken on a pad of 40 metres or more, which tells you what changes here: the exercises need room, and several of them are assessed on whether they use it.
The bracket arrives. It turns against the curve while changing edge, which makes it the turn with nothing helping: the rotation and the lobe disagree from beginning to end. Before 01/10/2026 the brackets were inside ones only, and the counter waited until Skills 6.
From 01/10/2026 two exercises are added. One is a figure of eight of forward outside brackets from standing, a turn the previous syllabus held back until Skills 7. The other is a backward counter exercise, which brings the counter down a level and makes Skills 5 the test that completes the four one-foot turns.
The triple 3-turn in exercise 1 and the slip chassé in exercise 3 both have pages of their own. The slip chassé’s page shows its tracing but no figure.
Exercises
- Multi-directional 3-turnsTriple 3-turns on the forward outside edges, and double 3-turns run into open mohawks on the inside ones.
- Forward rockersForward outside and forward inside rockers alternating with crossovers, finishing on a held back outside edge.
- Choctaws & mohawksClosed mohawks from a back outside edge on the first side, and open choctaws with slip chassés on the second.
- Inside bracketsForward and backward inside brackets, entered from crossovers, on a shape the skater chooses.
- Skating exerciseA serpentine of backward inside 3-turns and open mohawks, two lobes on each foot, joined entirely by crossovers.
- Bracket exercisenew 01/10/2026Brackets on a figure of eight from a stationary start, two circles on each foot.
- Backward counter exercisenew 01/10/2026Backward inside counters into open mohawks, and backward outside counters into 3-turns, with changes of edge between them.
