outside edge: the paler line
RBO. A skater who rotates the other way traces LBO: the same element, generated from this one.

The edge almost every jump in the guide lands on, which is reason enough to spend time on it for its own sake. Travelling backwards on the outside of the blade, leaning into the circle, with the difficulty that you cannot see where you are going and the instinct is to sit away from it.

Weight belongs over the middle of the blade. Sit back and it skids; reach for the toe and it stops. What makes this edge hard is the holding: keeping the shoulders and the free leg still against a rotation that wants to carry on. That is the run-out of a jump landing, practised on its own with the jump taken away.

Derived

RBO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): right foot, backwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.

RBO traces an anticlockwise lobe seen from above the ice. Change any one of the three letters and it curves the other way; change two and it curves the same way again.

A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from LBO. Same element, mirrored.
