Backwards from the inside edge to the outside, the lobe reversing. The weakest entry edge rolling onto the strongest exit, which makes this more useful than it looks: it is the cheapest way of getting from a back inside edge to a checked back outside one.
The whole move lives in the ankle and the hip. If the shoulders join in, you have started a turn instead.
Derived
RBI is three letters (foot, direction, edge): right foot, backwards, inside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
RBI change of edge to RBO: the blade rolls from one edge to the other without pivoting, the direction of travel does not change, and the lobe reverses.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from LBI. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Right backward inside edgeRBI: the right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge, tracing a clockwise lobe.
- Two-foot change of edgeBritish Ice Skating defines a change of edge as one foot's tracing leaving one curve and edge for another. Here both feet do it together.
- Backward slalomBritish Ice Skating Skills 1 builds its backward slalom from two-foot power changes of edge, the roll a backward change of edge makes on one blade.
