Backwards on the inside edge, rotating into the circle, out forwards on the outside edge. This is where a good many skaters quietly stall, because the entry is the edge they practise least and the exit is a forward outside edge that has to be held. Reaching it is not enough.
Done properly it is one of the most useful turns on the ice: it converts a backward inside edge into a forward outside one, which is how a great many step sequences begin.
Derived
RBI is three letters (foot, direction, edge): right foot, backwards, inside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
RBI three turn to RFO: the edge changes, the skater rotates into the circle, and the lobe continues.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from LBI. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Right backward inside edgeRBI: the right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge, tracing a clockwise lobe.
- Backward two-foot turnBoth turn from backwards to forwards, and the three turn does it on one foot.
