You glide forwards on the outside edge, rotate half a turn towards the centre of the circle you are already tracing, and come out backwards on the inside edge of the same foot. The tracing left on the ice makes the shape the turn is named for.
The thing worth understanding is that the circle does not change. You start on it and you finish on it; the edge and the direction you are facing are all that change. That is what separates a three turn from a rocker, which looks similar and leaves you on a new circle curving the other way.
Rotate towards the centre and the cusp points inwards. Rotate away and you have a bracket instead.
Derived
LFO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, forwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LFO three turn to LBI: the edge changes, the skater rotates into the circle, and the lobe continues.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RFO. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Left forward outside edgeLFO: the left foot travelling forwards on an outside edge, tracing an anticlockwise lobe.
- Two-foot turnBoth turn from forwards to backwards, and the three turn does it on one foot. Ice Skating Australia teaches the two-foot turn first.
Off the ice
- A deep, soft kneeThe bend skating lives on: strength to hold it, and an ankle that uses all the boot allows.
- Core and carriageA trunk that holds its shape while the shoulders and hips move separately.
