The free foot swings in from the side, passes the skating foot and goes down on its own outside edge. Because the new edge is outside on the other foot, the curve reverses. One lobe ends and the next begins as the feet cross.
It is the most expressive way of getting from one lobe to the next and the least forgiving, because the whole transfer happens over an outside edge with the body already leaning the new way. Lean late and it becomes a step; lean early and you fall into the new lobe. Timed right, you roll into it.
Derived
LFO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, forwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LFO cross roll to RFO: the skater steps onto the other foot, the direction of travel does not change, and the lobe reverses.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RFO. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Left forward outside edgeLFO: the left foot travelling forwards on an outside edge, tracing an anticlockwise lobe.
- Forward strokingBritish Ice Skating's cross roll brings the free foot in from the side and past the skating foot onto the next outside curve, the weight rolling across with it.
