Backwards on the inside of the blade. Most skaters meet this edge last, partly because it is the least used on its own and partly because the position is awkward: the free leg sits on the inside of the circle, crossing the line of travel, with nowhere obvious to put it.
It earns its keep elsewhere. It is the takeoff of the flip and the Salchow and the exit of a forward outside three turn, so a weak back inside edge shows up as a problem in things that look nothing like it.
Derived
LBI is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, backwards, inside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LBI traces an anticlockwise lobe seen from above the ice. Change any one of the three letters and it curves the other way; change two and it curves the same way again.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RBI. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Backward strokingIce Skating Australia holds each backward stroke for two to three seconds with the free foot ahead above the line, and its backward edges keep the free leg in the same place.
- Backward one-foot glideNew Zealand moves the backward glide onto a curve and round a circle, which is the backward edges. On them, Ice Skating Australia keeps the free leg ahead, above the line.
Leads to
10 elements in the guide are built on this one, and the 8 nearest are listed here.
- Left backward inside change of edgeLBI to LBO: the blade rolls across without turning, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Left backward inside loopLBI to LBI: a small circle traced on the same edge, still travelling backwards, and the lobe continues.
- Left backward inside push backLBI to RBO: a push off the inside edge onto the other foot's outside edge, still travelling backwards, and the lobe continues.
- Left backward inside step wideLBI to RBI: a step onto the other foot placed wide, nothing crossing, still travelling backwards, and the lobe reverses.
- Left backward inside mohawkLBI to RFI: a step onto the other foot, holding the edge and staying on the same lobe. No cusp.
- Left backward inside three turnLBI to LFO: half a turn into the circle, changing edge and staying on the same lobe.
- Left backward inside 1½ twizzleLBI to LFO: 1½ rotations on one foot, travelling, one curl and no cusp.
- Left backward inside 2½ twizzleLBI to LFO: 2½ rotations on one foot, travelling, 2 curls and no cusp.
