British Ice Skating: Skills

British Ice Skating1 level

Not checked yet. The level lists on this page are a first draft by a non-expert, and no coach has seen them yet. Read them as a starting point and check them with a coach. Corrections are very welcome.

British Ice Skating’s skating-skills ladder is the National Skills Tests, Skills 1 to 8, revised on 01/10/2026. They are the guide’s home ladder: every exercise in them has its own page, and every element page lists the British tests and exercises that call for it.

Below Skills 1 sits Skate UK Fundamentals, British Ice Skating’s learn-to-skate programme. It is published as a paid booklet and not on a public page, so the guide does not lay it out; the basics cover the same ground from other countries’ public documents. Beside the Skills tests run the National free skating tests, Beginner and National 1 to 8, which have their own page, and the two ladders interlock: each National level needs the Skills test of the same number.

Each test has its own page in this guide, with its exercises and the elements they call for.
