Forwards on the outside edge; then, without turning on the blade, you step onto the other foot and travel backwards on its outside edge. The circle and the character of the edge stay the same. The foot and the direction you face both change.
The forward outside mohawk is the less common of the two, and it is the harder to make look calm, because the free foot has to arrive turned out and close in without the hips opening first. There is no cusp to hide behind: whatever the edge was doing at the moment of the step is what appears on the ice.
Derived
LFO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, forwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LFO mohawk to RBO: the skater steps onto the other foot, the edge holds, and the lobe continues. There is no cusp, because nothing pivots.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RFO. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Left forward outside edgeLFO: the left foot travelling forwards on an outside edge, tracing an anticlockwise lobe.
- Two-foot turnBoth turn from forwards to backwards, and the mohawk changes feet as it turns. Ice Skating Australia teaches its forward inside mohawk after the two-foot turns.
Off the ice
- Hips and turnoutHow far the legs rotate outward from the hip, for the free leg, mohawks and the spread eagle.
