Backwards, with the free foot sliding away to the rear as the weight arrives on the new one. Which way it slides is the only thing separating this from the forward version, and it always goes against the way you are travelling.
Keeping the foot on the ice keeps it available, which is the point of the movement. A chassé that has to reach for its free foot has already lost the edge it was there to protect, and going backwards you cannot see whether it has. What you can feel is load: a foot that has gone light has left early.
Skate it slower than feels right. The slide takes time that a lift does not.
Derived
LBO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, backwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LBO slip chassé to RBI: the skater steps onto the other foot, the direction of travel does not change, and the lobe continues.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RBO. Same element, mirrored.
Build on
- Left backward outside edgeLBO: the left foot travelling backwards on an outside edge, tracing a clockwise lobe.
- Backward strokingBritish Ice Skating's slip chassé, skated backwards, slides the free foot off the ice to the back on the second step.
