Loop
RBO takeoff, off the edge, 1 rotation to RBO.
Not checked yet. The mechanics on this page are a first draft by a non-expert, and no coach has seen them yet. Read them as a starting point and check them with a coach. Corrections are very welcome.
A back outside edge, no pick, and the rotation comes entirely from the edge and the check. Nothing helps you: there is no swing through and nothing to vault off, which is what makes the loop the honest test of a skater’s edge.
It shares its takeoff with the toe loop, and the two are told apart by whether a pick goes in. Seen from above they are the same entry; seen from the side, one has a jab in it.
What it rests on is the back outside edge held with the free side checked. That is the extended edge, and a loop is very close to being that position asked to leave the ice without help.
Derived
RBO is three letters (foot, direction, edge): right foot, backwards, outside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
Takes off RBO and lands RBO, the same edge every jump in this guide but the Euler lands on, so the takeoff is what tells them apart. The spring comes from the edge, with no pick.
Shares its takeoff edge with the toe loop and the Euler: the pair that get mistaken for each other.
The double loop is this jump with one more turn in the air: the same takeoff and the same landing.
Lands on RBO, where the toe loop and the loop take off, so it can start a combination: loop + toe loop or loop + loop.
Takes off from RBO, the edge every other jump here lands on, so it can follow any of them in a jump combination.
A skater who rotates clockwise takes off LBO and lands LBO: the same jump, mirrored.
Off the ice
- Holding the landingThe one position the jumps land in, held for longer than a landing lasts.
- Jumping and turning off the floorFloor jumps: going up before going round, pulling in, and opening out to land.
