You take off from a back inside edge with the other foot’s toe pick, turn half way in the air away from the picking foot, and land on the toe of the other foot before the picking foot comes down. Ice Skating Australia then asks for a forward inside three turn and the landing position held on a back outside edge. Its manual calls it a split jump without the split.
The landing is what to check: it comes down on the toe of the foot that did not pick, never the same one. U.S. Figure Skating’s list of jumps calls it the half toe Salchow, a half-revolution jump, and counts it as a jump on the Pre-Preliminary test but not in Preliminary competition.
New Zealand’s KiwiSkate assesses it at Free skating 2.
Build on
- Bunny hopLanding on a toe pick and stepping straight on is the bunny hop, and it is how the half flip lands; the half flip adds a backward take-off and half a turn.
- Waltz jumpThe first jump, and the only one with a forward takeoff apart from the Axel it grows into.
Leads to
2 elements in the guide are built on this one.
- Half LutzThe half Lutz is the half flip taken off from a back outside edge.
- Tap toe jumpThe tap toe jump is the half flip's take-off and half turn, landing toe to toe and pushing straight off onto the other foot.
