Forwards on an inside edge, and the free foot goes down wide: out to the side, clear of the skating foot, on an inside edge of its own. The weight crosses onto it and the old skating foot comes up. Because the foot changed and the edge did not, the lobe reverses under you.
Nothing crosses and nothing passes, and that is the whole of the difference between this and the three transitions it sits beside. A crossover, a chassé and a cross roll each place the free foot in relation to the skating one. Here it lands away from it, and the width is the point.
British Ice Skating write it forwards twice, in Skills 1 and Skills 2, in the middle of an edge sequence where it gets you off one lobe and onto the next without a turn. Step too narrow and there is nothing left to push against.
Derived
LFI is three letters (foot, direction, edge): left foot, forwards, inside edge. Every edge in the guide is written that way, so RBI is a right foot travelling backwards on an inside edge.
LFI step wide to RFI: the skater steps onto the other foot, the direction of travel does not change, and the lobe reverses.
A skater who rotates the other way does the same thing from RFI. Same element, mirrored.

- Left forward inside edgeLFI: the left foot travelling forwards on an inside edge, tracing a clockwise lobe.
- Forward strokingA wide step changes feet as a stroke does, with the new foot placed out to the side and nothing crossing.
