The run LFO take-off · land on RBO with the feet crossed · back spin
Not drawn in the body frame yet: the body frame cannot yet land a jump straight into a spin.
You take off forwards as for a waltz jump or a single Axel, and instead of landing and gliding out, you land with the free leg already crossed and keep turning in a back spin. The walkthrough is the same without leaving the ice: a step from the take-off onto the other foot and one turn of back spin.
It trains the position the Axel needs in the air: the weight over the landing side and the legs crossed, so the rotation has an axis to turn about. A skater who lands wide or with the free leg swinging cannot turn it into a spin, which makes the drill its own check.
It is a later drill, for a skater who already has the waltz jump and the back spin.
This drill trains
- AxelLFO takeoff, off the edge, 1.5 rotations to RBO.
- Back spinAn upright spin on a back edge with the free leg crossed over the skating leg, left on a back outside edge.

- Waltz jumpThe first jump, and the only one with a forward takeoff apart from the Axel it grows into.
